The Things You See From Way up High

Kyle, 14 years old, had never been up in a float plane before. Mind you, he's been zip lining at Marble Mountain, Nfld., and jumped off the old railway bridge in Algonquin Park, and he's doing pretty well at ticking things off his 'bucket list,' but until tonight he'd only been in big jetliners.

Brian helped him put a check mark on that one. The boys went flying this evening, their take-off watched by two curious horses who had come down with their jockeys to splash in lake and cool down after schooling.

While up there, Kyle saw not only the 'usual' sights -- although looking down on this incredibly beautiful carpet of trees and lakes and rocks that are Muskoka can hardly be called 'usual' -- , but he got to see some pretty unusual sights as well.

Brian spotted smoke to the south: it turned out to be a house fire, fully involved, near the Gravenhurst Airport. We hope there were no injuries. Fires are dreadful things, taking away in moments memories and accomplishments that have taken years to build. It's not the first fire Brian seen while airborne -- he got some incredible photos of the bridge at Smoke Lake, Algonquin Park, when the truck overturned and burned the bridge beyond repair. One of those photos was sold to a magazine about Roads and Bridges, and featured on the cover.

After checking out the firetruck action, the boys headed home. Flying west, Kyle was treated to a view few of us get to see from that perspective. The way the sun hit the clouds reminded him of a mushroom cloud, but this one was completely benign, signifying only more good weather tomorrow, and reflecting in the lakes below.

Thanks for sharing your pictures, Kyle!
