The mink is not at all inconvenienced by the January thaw, skipping along the ice, focused on his mission. We frequently see these fellows around the Resort. They can be quite cheeky little chaps. Years ago we had guests who were fishing along the rocks by the Port Cunnington Road. They had sandwiches for a picnic in a hamper, and they had their 'catch' of bass in a bucket. While they were lunching, they wedged the bow of the canoe into the rocks.
And along came Mink... hopping over the rocks, into the canoe without so much as a May I?, gave them one sidelong look, scooped up a fish, and vanished into the water on the deep side.
There have been a lot of reports of seeing barred owls lately. Brian met one while working on the ski trails last week. This photo capture of one in flight is one of the best shots we've seen.Thanks Mike for sharing your wonderful wild friends with us!
You don't need to go anywhere special to see wildlife in North Muskoka -- it is all around us.
I've seen the tracks of mink in the snow periodically, but never saw the critter themselves.
