Give Turtles a Brake

Near the Oxtongue Craft Cabin, this grand old lady was -- once again -- hiking across the road.   It was pouring rain, but there was nothing for it: too much traffic...

I got out to supervise her journey and ensure the cars avoided her. And several of the drivers stopped to tell me that they had been in the same position recently -- helping this gal on her ramblings.  That's such heartening news, since cars are the primary cause of death for Snapping Turtles, who are now becoming endangered because of driving habits and impatience.

They really are wonderful beings, with that prehistoric face, and dinosaur spikes on the tail.  Love sharing the planet with them.   So, please everyone, it is Turtle breeding season. They are looking for soft sand in which to lay eggs for the future, and often choose the edge of the highways. Slow down -- give turtles a Brake!!

  1. I've given them escorts across the road. They're magnificent critters, even if they are temperamental.
