Bondi Resort Blog

Come on into our Blog for a look at the wonderful world we've got to share! With over 240 hectares (600 acres) of wilderness woodlands surrounding the resort, just ten minutes from Algonquin Park, we feature over 400 metres (1200’) of waterfront and beach; boat rentals; summer hiking trails winding through fields and woods; 20 km. of groomed cross country ski trails and snowshoeing in winter; access to nearby snowmobile trails for sledders, and a toboggan hill for the young at heart.

Bird Be Safae

These are the BirdBeSafe collars that the 'kids' are wearing to help keep them from being able to catch birds.
The vivid colours alert the birds better than a bell.  Audobon recommends them, citing that they can reduce bird-kill
by over 80%.  And since that's a big number, and since we love our birds, but also love our cats (although some days we are not sure why with the latter as they dismantle the house) we are 'test driving' these collars.
So far, they have definitely been successful.  And the cats think they look quite 'fashion forward'.

Mergansers

We only get to see the 'boys' in their glory at this time of year.  Later in the summer they will have exchanged these spectacular white feathers for something far less flashy.

Up close

People are very familiar with the autumn colours of the sugar maple trees.  But have you ever taken a closer look at them in spring?  They bloom, with tiny red flowers.  Spectacular in a less showy fashion than the autumn glory, but still extraordinarily lovely.  Because the blossoms are so far up in the tree, it is often hard to get a close look at them.  Luckily, the tree at Sunflower cottage was agreeable to letting me get a close up.

Visitors

a selection of photos from my bird feeders this past month.  At this time of year, the birds are coming back, and we get new species passing through or dropping in for the entire season.  It is a wonderful time.  How many of these beauties have you checked off your birder list?

First Swimmers!

I knew I could count on these kids to make a big splash this weekend at Bondi Village Resort. When they are here in the summer they are rarely OUT of the lake! Speaking of summer, we still have some weeks available -- don't miss out on the chance to make magical family memories!

May and Moose... the two just go together in Algonquin Park.  My favourite photo from among those that Karen sent us from their visit with us this past week.

May 2, our guests go moose hunting

our guests were in the Park last week 'moose hunting.' Very successfully 'moose hunting' too. Thanks for sharing your photos!
Karen Arnott to Bondi Village Resort
Had a great time last weekend at Bondi and Algonquin. Saw lots of moose. Bondi is a great place to stay. We will be back.

another wonderful moose photo from our guest Karen Arnott. Taken last week in Algonquin Park. 'Tis the season to see the mighty moose! #bondivillageresort #explorersedge #travelontario #muskoka #algonquinpark#moosemagic

April 28, the Frogs start Singing

During the thunderstorm last night the spring frogs were trilling like crazy

I've been posting videos on our Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/BondiVillageResort/ because it's been easier from my new phone...   But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the sounds of a Muskoka evening!

The neighbours were whooping it up this evening. It started with the wild turkeys gobbling on the hill and was followed by the trilling and peeping frogs, barred owls and loons. Choir choir choir has nothing on these songsters. You'll need the volume up though😎🐾🐸🦃🦉

It's Official!

It's official. The BMD are on the water

Loons are Back!

April 22. The loons are back. Spring peepers in full song. Two of my most favourite sounds  I took this video tonight, about 10.30 p.m.  There is nothing to see, just loons and frogs to listen to.  The best orchestra ever.

Moose are on the Loose

OntarioTourist
Moose Watching season has started this week in Algonquin Park. The ponds and marshes have unfrozen near HWY60. The moose are getting salt to replenish their bodies after the winter. #muskoka #discoverON #moosewatching www.cottage-resort.com

April 20, David gets famous (more famous???)

Look who made the Barrie news!!!! David's pic of our under-water docks.#bondivillageresort #ctvbarrie #muskokafloods
Several roads have flooded in Muskoka and in Ramara Township.

Ragged and Rugged, Ragged Falls in full Flood

one of our smallest parks, but with a waterfall that packs the biggest punch! Ragged Falls in spring flood. You should go see it. Only about a ten minute distance from Bondi Village!

This video is really worth the watch.

One day after Ice out, April 19

With the ice going out yesterday, thoughts naturally start to turn to summer fun! Might want to wait a touch longer however before going for that first waterski! #Muskoka #LakeOfBays #travel #summervacation#BondiCottageResort

Tamarack glory

Spring brings so much new life to the forest. This is a tamarack -- the only evergreen to shed its needles in the autumn, after blazing into golden glory late in the fall. Come spring, the new buds open into soft green, with the flowers briefly glorious, while the old cones still cling to the branches. This wonderful photo, showing all three phases at once, was taken by Rob and Jean Hilscher, from Oxtongue Lake. Thanks for the share.

April 17, Barrels on the Dock

The ice is close to being totally gone. Some still jingling in the corners of the bay and lots out by the island but it is done. Leaving softly. Water levels are up, but it is ice that does the damage

April 16, watching and listening to the ice on the move

It is very faint, but you can hear the ice 'chiming' in the background, as it pushes into itself, breaks apart, piles onto itself, or the rocks, or the dock... Birds overhead. Mist... reflection. I am so lucky to be able to walk along this shoreline every day.

Listening to the ice chiming as it leaves the bay

You can hear the ice, a low whispering, like faint wind chimes, as it crumples and collides

Ice is a driving force

Ice damage. The dock at Clover cottage has been shoved on shore. The BMD will be working on this!

Easter Sunday, Pemberley reports in

April 15th.  Pemberley's Diary...

I continue my quest to lure in the deer...   although I have been told that even if I do succeed in catching one, I won't be able to get it in through the cat flap...

(editorial comment: he is getting closer every day to the deer.  And has also taken to 'duck tolling' along the shore. Although that exercise ended in a very wet cat.

Eagles above us, April 15

Yesterday the bald eagle spent some time with us, soaring in huge circles above the resort, a bit too high to get a good picture. He/she was joined by five turkey vultures, with wing feathers extended, gliding by. And on the Lookout, the turkeys are starting to call. Swallows are back, frogs are singing in the pond, juncos are swarming the feeders, deer are on the lawns. What a wonderful time of the year.

April 14th... Going, going, almost gone

Ice is getting darker. Almost gone. A heavy rain could end it. Or a few more days like today's

Springing Water

With the spring melt reaching its peak, there are new and unique water features to discover around every corner! There's never a boring time of year here! #explorersedge #muskoka #spring #getoutdoors #travel #explore

April 12 brought Mergansers

Every day here, Nature brings us great gifts. Yesterday, these mergansers appeared along the shore. The 'boys', in full mating plumage, are hard to photograph (they 'cheat the meter' on the camera with their dazzling white, and are very very shy of cameras) Fabulous birds to have back with us, and to watch all through the summer as the moms come by with their big broods to fish along our shorelines. Welcome back!! #springbirdmigrationontario#explorersedge #mergansers #bondivillage #algonquinpark #ontariotravel
